If you think you may have the symptoms of swine flu you should:

  • 1) Stay at home.
  • 2) Visit www.direct.gov.uk/pandemicflu OR call 0800 1 513 513 and check your symptoms.
  • 3) Try some self-care like taking paracetamol and other over the counter remedies. Get lots of rest and drink plenty of fluids.
  • 4) If you are not getting any better, call the National Pandemic Flu Service (NPFS) on 0800 1 513 100 or 0800 1 513 200 (Textphone)
  • 5) Contact your GP directly (rather than ringing the NPFS) if:
  • • you have a serious underlying illness;
  • • you are pregnant;
  • • you have a sick child under one year old;
  • • your condition suddenly gets much worse; or
  • • your condition is still getting worse after seven days (five for a child).

Should you get vaccinated against swine flu?

The swine flu vaccination is currently available for the following people. If you have received a letter from your doctor (GP) it is because you should have the swine flu vaccine. We have included some information on the vaccine in our ADVICE section. You can also find out about vaccination in our new easy read leaflet....

The swine flu vaccine is for people aged six months and over:

• with an ongoing health condition such as; asthma, chronic heart disease, chronic renal disease, illnesses of the nervous system and diabetes; or

• whose immune systems are not working properly due to disease or treatment such as cancer treatment, HIV positive people and people who have had treatment with steroids for a prolonged amount of time; or

• who are pregnant; or

• who live with individuals whose immune systems are not working properly.

If you usually have the seasonal flu vaccine you should have this aswell.

The swine flu vaccine is also being made available for all children aged six months to five years old. We are currently making plans for how children in Leeds can get the vaccine and will include the information on this website.

We have tried to include as much information as possible on the site but if you feel there is anything missing please contact us through our Facebook group at www.facebook.com/nhs.leeds or by emailing communications.team@nhsleeds.nhs.uk
